NEPU adheres to the educational characteristics of "all-round and multi-level production-education-research cooperation" and the scientific research development concept of "business demand-driven, development goal-oriented, top-level design and planning", and actively serves the petroleum and petrochemical industry and local economy and society. NEPU has 1 national key primary discipline, 1 provincial  key discipline group , 6 provincial key primary disciplines, a national university science park, and 48 scientific research platforms including  the various laboratories and research centers.
